It is always fun to check out a new piece of equipment and in this case my four year old was a willing subject. He could not wait to show me his new trick with the skateboard. The trick you ask. You are looking at it. 6 Brendan’s trick (see lighting diagram on page 160). 19 Speedlights and Speedlites TTL Flash and Subject Size Because the metering sensors cover the entire area and are making a “best estimate” for what is most important in the frame, if the flash subject is very small in the picture, or if only a small portion of the picture is illuminated with TTL flash, the flash may overcompensate.

A “polar bear in a snow storm,” correctly exposed, should display a histogram with the majority of the tonal values in the “white with detail” section. To ensure detail in all the white values, no pixels should touch the extreme right edge. A small “bump” may appear in the “black with detail” section, representing the bear’s black nose and claws. A group of groomsmen in black tuxedos against a dark-toned background, correctly exposed, should show the majority of tonal values in the “black with detail” and “dark tones” sections.

6 Exposure meter versus histogram. RGB Histogram The RGB histogram shows the exposure levels for each of the three color channels making up the digital image file: red, green, and blue. The RGB histogram is used to ensure visible detail in all color channels. There may be images where the Bright or Luminosity histogram shows no overexposed pixels, yet the blinkies are indicating loss of detail. This may be a case where highlight tonal value, or color, is held, but those areas contain color, and tonal value with no visible detail.
