26 Television producers Factual television involves a myriad of small details. The team’s producers or producer-directors in charge of specific programmes will have the fullest knowledge of those details. Only the series producer, however, will have broad insights into the whole series. The series producer, for example, may regard some programmes as potentially stronger as well as more risky than others. The series producer often must ponder a proposed foreign-filming story which is potentially the best programme in the series, but which is also the most costly and may seem to have only a 50 per cent chance of reaching the screen.

Let us look at our four factual fields in turn. The more ambitious documentary programming—such as that which involves large amounts of foreign filming—is fairly expensive to make and only achieves modest audience numbers. In terms of cost per viewer this is the most expensive of the factual genres. It carries high prestige within the TV industry.
