Above Sutton’s (later Howell’s Finest Hardware) was the Howell Opera House. Opened in 1881, it featured everything from Gilbert and Sullivan to Shakespeare to jugglers to William Jennings Bryan. It also served as a courthouse. The opera house closed in 1924 and became a neglected storage space. But it is going to have a happy ending. In 2000, the Livingston Arts Council (LAC) bought the building.
