Run by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the program’s goal was to land astronauts on the Moon and return them safely to Earth. The first Moon landing was achieved by Apollo 11 on July 20, 1969. ASTRONAUT An American who flies in space. COLD WAR The Cold War was a time of political, economic, and cultural tension between the United States and its allies and the Soviet Union and other Communist nations.

The flight almost ends in tragedy. 1969, July 16 Apollo 11 launches with Neil Armstrong as commander. 1969, July 20 Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin fly the Eagle Lunar Module and land on the Moon. Neil Armstrong becomes the first man to walk on the surface of the Moon. 1969, July 24 Apollo 11 splashes down safely in the Pacific Ocean. The astronauts receive a hero’s welcome. 28 Neil Armstrong puts on his helmet on July 16, 1969, the Apollo 11 launch day. 1971 Armstrong retires from NASA and becomes a college professor teaching aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati, Ohio.
