Bowen and Greig first obtained a systematic phase diagram for this system showing the compound mullite to melt incongruently at =1828"C. Aramaki and Roy on the other hand proposed a revision which shows a congruently melting behavior for mullite at =1850"C. The stable phase equilibrium diagram proposed by Aksay and Pask is in general agreement with Bowen and Greig's version. The point of including these conflicting sets of phase diagrams for the A1203-Si02system is to alert the student to the fact that one must use a particular diagram with awareness of the purpose and experimental methods by which the original phase diagram was obtained.

In a closed system at atmospheric pressure, the vapor phase would not appear until very high temperatures were reached. Diagrams are seldom extended to these temperatures. In an open system, those atoms which acquire sufficient energy to escape the surface of the melt or solid will be able to diffuse to the surroundings and may condense on cooler surfaces.
