As it had been since antiquity, historiography was still classified as a branch of narrative literature and a rather loftier one than prose fiction. ) To be a historian was supposed to require narrative skill and a penetrating The Waverley-model 31 judgment of men and affairs; it was not supposed to entail non-partisan professionalism or specialist training in the gathering, collating, and assessing of evidence. Not surprisingly, therefore, poets and philosophers considered historiography a fair field for exercising their talents.
Allen Tate indicates the importance of this awareness in an analysis of the role of myth which takes its departure from a distinction drawn by T. S. Eliot between two kinds of mythology, a higher and a lower. The Roman toga of our early Republic was doubtless of a sort of lower mythology, inferior to the higher mythology of the Christian thirteenth century, and I suppose Mr. Eliot would prefer the higher vision, as I myself should were I allowed a preference. But we must remember that the rationalism of the eighteenth century had made myths of all ranks exceedingly scarce, as the romantic poets were beginning to testify; yet the Virginian did remarkably well with the minor myth that his age permitted him to cultivate.
First, there are the English and Scottish Lowland Jacobites represented by old-fashioned landed aristocrats Sir Everard Waverley, the Baron Bradwardine, and the novel's youthful hero Edward Waverley. These Stuart supporters share a common culture with each other and also, despite relatively deep party and philosophical differences, with the Whig adherents of a Hanoverian succession. They do so sufficiently for Edward to be the son of an English Whig politician and yet to serve in the Young Pretender's army and marry the Scottish Baron's daughter Rose.
