In a traffic light, there are three colors: red, green, and yellow. What they mean is defined by their relationship to one another. Red is not-green-or-yellow. Yellow is not-green-or-red. Green is not­ yellow-or-red. The referential meaning we decide to assign to each of these is quite arbitrary. Green could equally easily indicate stop, red proceed. The interpretation of green as proceed and red as stop is entirely based on custom.
