Chinese film studies, therefore, is by its nature comparative. It stands to benefit from comparative scholarship with regard to Hollywood and other national cinemas. Indeed, one reason why comparative film studies does not exist as a separate discipline is the widely held assumption that the study of any national cinema is by necessity comparative.
