Charlie Hebdo est un magazine hebdomadaire satirique français. Créé en 1970 pour combler le vide laissé par une autre revue satirique de l. a. même équipe, Hara-Kiri, qui venait d'être interdit après un titre jugé scandaleux annonçant los angeles mort de Charles de Gaulle (« Bal tragique à Colombey — 1 mort »), il est publié régulièrement jusqu'en 1982. l. a. parution cesse ensuite jusqu'en 1992, date à laquelle les anciens journalistes et caricaturistes se retrouvent pour former une nouvelle équipe, avec de nouveaux talents.
Ses caricatures de Mahomet ont déclenché régulièrement des réactions violentes dans le monde musulman. Elles sont à l'origine de l'attentat terroriste islamiste du 7 janvier 2015 dans lequel sont tuées douze personnes, dont dix collaborateurs et proches du magazine. Le numéro 1178 dit « des survivants » variety le mercredi suivant. Il est tiré à près de huit thousands d'exemplaires. Après cette attaque, le magazine passe en moins d'un mois de 10 000 à 220 000 abonnés.
