Plasterwork. From the later Middle Ages until the end of the eighteenth century, Plasterwork was an important factor in ornamental treatment. ' Parge-work', or the ornamenting of external walls that were plastered on timber framing, with simple patterns or coats of arms—modelled in relief and sometimes coloured—can be seen in the English country or in villages and towns, on sixteenth and seventeenth century buildings that are often quite humble; their internal ceilings sometimes being decorated in a similar way.
