Then they came in for a big meeting and said, “Look, we’re laying it on the line. ” Patrick Hopple: We said, “First, to build this thing, especially with a bunch of amateurs, you’re going to have to make a unit that somebody can build on the ground and then hoist up. ” Also, once we started tracing, we started to see nice patterns in the circles. We started looking at them, saying, “What if we did them like this? ” We overlaid all the different ideas and eventually started seeing the development of a modular unit.
Art was frantically trying to get everything going. He needed those drawings. Dan Wood: Art is an artist as well as an installer, and we always say that this is what made him such a great fit for the project. He was able to approach this messy construction problem with an artist’s eye and a huge amount of creativity. The whole warehouse setup was really an ingenious artwork in many ways—part Rube Goldberg, part Tim Hawkinson. 1 process.
